I suspected Frederick had Jewish ancestry so this became one way for his family to attempt to deflect any interest by the SS. I didn't confirm that with text, but there was definitely a Jewish woman in their building, which added to my suspicions.
Lily, don't you remember that the mother said the old (Jewish) crone would be gone soon and they would take her space?
These people were proud and fanatic, don't forget that. They wanted and competed to get into the elite whatevers.
Yes, I agree that the text can be read that way. But the mother still didn't come across as Nazi fanatic to me. Maybe yours is a more valid reading. In any case, those were times that led people to dreadful decisions.
