Thank you so much for answering and not making me feel like a complete idiot. And there is certainly still cause for wonder, IMHO.
But, Robin, when Marie-Laure opened it, there was just the key inside.
Yes, but the key unlocked the gate to the grotto. So could it be hidden there?
The Sea of Flames story was a myth. Was it actually the cause of good luck/bad luck? To what extent did the characters' belief or disbelief motivate their actions?
