I would be hard-pressed to pick just one of his books as my favorite but Needful Things, Salem's Lot, The Gunslinger and It are among my top picks.
The Stand was also a very good book and I do agree with you about the ending, which is why I wouldn't put it so high on my list. I feel like one of King's greatest strengths is character development, making characters you care about, with realistic and believable dialogue. In that regard, The Stand is certainly a great example.
