That IS an interesting question! Funny that you don't much care for Finn, because Conlan from Lovers and Other Strangers is my least favorite of your main characters. I found myself wishing Finn would just tell him to get lost. ;)
That's me. Ms. Original. :-) I didn't mind David Flynn. But I have never been partial to Adam from Murder in Pastel.
Isn't that funny? Because I actually remember being choked up writing some of Finn's scenes -- so I was definitely into the story at the time, but looking back that's one of the books that leaves me cold. Conlon is tricky because of the infidelity, but he was so abjectly sorry and had suffered for so long. I clearly have too much sympathy for miscreants. ;-D
That's so funny to me. I've heard that before about Adam, and yet he is one of the most careful and conscientious characters I've written. He is scrupulous about not taking advantage, not cheating, not betraying...but somehow that comes across as not invested enough in the relationship or something. It's so interesting to me.
He came off as callous. And it was like he was showing Brett off to Kyle or something. I just didn't like him. Or rather I didn't like the way he made Kyle feel. I also didn't like Ryo at first. But if you look at it as a manga-esque story, he grows on you.
Connor in Everything I Know reminded me of Mary Calmes' Jory. I don't know why but I just loved him.
Ryo is definitely a manga-type character. As is Kai. I don't think they believably exist outside of Blood Red Butterfly. But in a way that is to the point of that creative exercise.
I'm also -- I hesitate to say it because the book is so damned popular -- am not that crazy about Rob or Adam in Winter Kill. :-D I think because I was moving house in the middle of the book. So I think of that book and feel sort of queasy.
I think Winter Kill was among the first of your books that I got. And at the moment I had thought it was a regular police procedural.... Wasn't I pleasantly surprised. Is there any chance of getting a full length novel about Nash and Glen from In Plain Sight? Of your short story peoples I like them third best. First being Noel and Robbie then Graham and Wyatt. Damn, woman, how do you manage to get peoples so invested in your characters? :-D
The short stories are not really about the characters, but about their dilemma, so no. Those will never go any further. :-)
Although the do sometimes get codas -- or even guest appearance slots in other books. ;-D
