I got a kick out of your response because all of Jane Austen's novels are in my bedside table drawer along with Conan Doyle's Holmes, and John Donne's poetry. Brideshead is also a favorite; it's so different from all his witty, satirical shorter novels (though I like them all. Thumbs up for Kate Atkinson! Hilary Mantel is the best; I started reading her in the early '90s, though most people in America didn't know her until Wolf Hall. I also read all 9 of Galsworthy's Forsyte Chronicles and Paul Scott's wonderful Raj Quartet every 2 or 3 years.
