Interesting; I never viewed the process in that light, but there's merit in the observation. I 'create' worlds in an attempt to place my characters in imaginary locations with which the reader can empathise without having to stretch imagination to breaking point. I go for realism in settings, since the stories themselves tend to be either futuristic (in the scifi works) or contain elements of strangenes (in the fantasies). I don't want to overwhelm readers with oddity or novelty, merely introduce them to new places where they can empathise with the characters as they face whatever challenges I've placed before them.
As an agnostic, I've certainly never seen myself as godlike, though I can see the analogy now it's been pointed out!
