Did you ever play the Civilization RPG games? I used to spend endless hours on Civ3.
If you never played Lost Odyssey and you can get access to an Xbox 360, it's an amazing game which includes about 100 short stories that can be read as the "dreams" of the main character (you have to find a place for him to sleep). It was fun to play and unlike many RPGs the story has complexity and a little depth. It's a long game (4 disks!) but my all time favorite.
PS loved the Silo series
