That's exactly the same way I react to audiobooks.
I'm the same, but I still love audiobooks. I had to train myself to them over time, by listening to books I was already familiar with. And now that they can slow the speed down without distortion, I listen to everything at .75 or .8 speed. Works great, and helps me fit in more reading around running after my Miles-level hyperactive child.
Paladin of Souls as read by Kate Reading is gorgeous. There are so many moments that just send chills up and down my spine, they are that good. Lois, if there is one book of yours to listen to, make it Paladin. For a taste, just listen until the dinner where where the divine of the Bastard shows up!
I am another who often prefers to listen to books that I have already read. I find I get additional "stuff" when I listen that I don't get when reading to myself. Sometimes actual "action" or plot materials that I missed when reading. Sometimes the inflections or emotions put in by a good reader can add to my understanding of the book. I read quickly, so just the fact that listening forces me to take things more slowly lets my brain process things differently. A richer experience when I both read and later listen to a great book.
I started with the Vorkosigan Saga's audiobooks with Memory, which is still one of my dear favorites. I remember, though, screaming at Grover to get the names right. I've seen so-called "audiobook reader standard pronunciation guides", and he seemed to stick to those...but you can't do that with vernacular or other languages! I'm so glad you came out with a pronunciation guide, and that Grover found it. It made Komarr and those after, and those he went back in time to do at the beginning of the series, more enjoyable! ;)
We met briefly at Windycon so many years ago it's embarrassing, but I was dreadfully glad I got the opportunity. Stay well, and enjoy life -- you've done so well!
I have a couple Terry Pratchett audiobooks, but have only listened to one, on a car trip. The trip there only got us halfway through, so we had to listen to the rest a week later. Kind of spoiled it for me, but at least I got my husband to listen to a Pratchett! I once listened to a loaned audio book at home - had to sit at the computer playing solitaire while I listened, to avoid being bored or falling asleep! Besides, I can read a paper book in much less time than it takes to listen to an audiobook. Even on commutes or air travel, I would probably rather read a 'real' book than try to listen to one.
