Dyson, in a memoir, confessed to teaching himself "differential calculus" over a Christmas Break.
Stephenson, in Vol 1 of his Baroque Series, portrayed Newton as skipping math classes at Oxford (though showing up for tests). All the while, he was engaged with reconciling Euclid with the "new" algebra - though the "newness" may have been only algebraic notation.
(did Newton publish that reconciliation?")
