Spy School
By Crawford Anderson
“Hello, Ben,” said the man in my living room. “My name is Alexander Hale. I work for the CIA.” And just like that, my life became interesting.” I know this is a realistic fiction novel because the setting takes place in Washington DC and because the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) is a real organization. Stuart Gibbs, author of Spy School, takes us on a “spy”-tacular
adventure that will remind you of classics like James Bond and The Hardy Boys.
The setting is in Washington DC where St.Smithen’s Science Academy for Boys and Girls is located, the secret identity of Spy School. While the CIA is based out of Langley, Virginia, this is realistic fiction because Washington DC is a real place where many government agencies reside. Benjamin is the main character, who is also a middle schooler. Benjamin is also really good at math. “What is 98,261 times 147?” Alexander Hale questioned Ben. “14,444,367.” “I didn’t even have to think about it.” (page 5) Another leading character is Alexander Hale, a seasoned spy considered to be the most honored in the field. Ben develops a friendship with Erica, a steller spy student who is in the family business as Alexander’s daughter. Her grandfather is also a spy for the CIA.
I know this is realistic fiction because there is good v.s evil; the good guys (CIA) and the bad (SPYDER) are battling for Benjamin’s mathematical abilities. Ben has invented something called pinwheel, the ultimate code breaker. “Of course!” Zoe said.” You’re not just a coding genius. You’re the coding genius!” (page 183) Each side could use the device to hack each others mainframes and find out their secret data.
My favorite part of this book is when Ben gets abducted by SPYDER. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars because there is an intriguing ending as all good novels should conclude in my opinion. Would you like to find out what happens? Read this wonderful realistic fiction novel and enjoy. Thank you for reading my realistic fiction book report!
