AND the key to the SoF's resting place is in the house, which is sort of like having the SoF itself. Or something like that.
Isn't the point that we need to decide whether the stone has mythical powers, or not. Do we side with rational science or myth? Is the stone just carbon - or not? Must say, I'm still trying to work out the meaning of the stone....give me a couple of months!
I think Doerr needed to introduce a tangible element of destruction into the narrative. It was not enough that the Allies or the Nazis could destroy Marie_Laure and her great uncle. There had to be someone coming after her - a blind woman. In the process, she learned to defend herself.
I love and accept Carol Zinavage's explanation. I was so sure Werner and Marie-Laure were going to get together and live happily- ever- after, but life isn't neatly tied up in a bundle like many fairy tales.
I thought that the diamond ended up with Marie. I think Werner saw her drop it and retrieved it. I also wondered if she just put the box in water without dropping the diamond.
I wanted Jutta's son Max to find and keep the diamond. He figured out how to open the box. But that theory was spoiled because the key was inside. And if Werner possessed the diamond, it certainly didn't protect him.
Maybe little Max IS the continuation of the story..? There's got to be more to adding this snippet if it had no meaning. But much like the rape scene I guess...
My understanding is that the sea of flames stayed in the grotto. It represents greed, hope, loyalty, depending on who holds it or desires it. Marie-Laure didn't go back for it because she didn't need it. She wasn't looking after material gain, wealth. She wanted her father and that wasn't bringing her father back. When she possessed it, it brought pain and fear so why would she want that. I'm sad that Werner died, but such is life. I liked this book because of that, because it's just like life. Some are happy endings, some are tragic, and some are just...endings.
ah Marla. That is what I was thinking. That Marie didn't really drop the stone. That she kept the stone and just dropped the house. OR that Max found the stone AND the key and left the key for Marie but took the stone
