Genres can be helpful as a framework to see how the story you are reading deviates from those expectations... (I say this as a 7th grade ELA teacher working with a curriculum that is very genre focused). That being said, I'm often left feeling cheated and hamstrung when I have to classify something in a particular genre. Still, I do kinda like 'em on Goodreads... Reason #1 is pretty solid! It applies to bookstores, and classroom libraries, and virtual shelves on Goodreads. ;-)
