Shane Castle We know that some become sundered and fade away, others seem to be consigned to the Bastard's Hell (a somewhat vague 'place'), and some become reduced to chaos - although how that differs from fading to nothing seems possible to be a matter of time.
Chaos...there's an interesting philosophical exercise. Freud might think that a demon's wish to reduce the order it encounters is a return to to womb wish...
Here's another disturbing thought. Are the 5Gs keeping this world in a late medieval state of development just to harvest its souls?

Martha Shane, I think the gods are just as uninterested in the state of technology as they are in government. The world is progressing - we see the beginnings of printing presses in one of the latest novellas - but at about the same rate as the corresponding period in Earth history, i.e. slooowwwlllyy.

Softness "...others seem to be consigned to the Bastard's Hell (a somewhat vague 'place')..."

Bastard's Hell is the Bastard's lap, which is a fluffy place where one can remained curled up on for all eternity! And sometimes there's tacos! ^^

Lois Bujold @ Martha: Right-oh. Since the rate of deaths will be exactly the same at all times and in all places, one per birth, the details are a matter of indifference to the gods.

That said, I suppose more births, and riper souls who have had more time in the world to develop complexities, would seem a win for the gods, so They are unlikely to be anti-progress.

Ta, L.
