RJay Thanks for your thoughtful response. I find it disappointing, and disturbing that 'well-educated' historians propose their judgments or suppositions as facts and that others perpetuate them. There is nothing wrong with supposition but it should be made obvious to readers that it is that - a writer's opinion about what happened or didn't. It is somewhat unnerving to realize that you do not consider this a new trend ... but a long-standing tradition. What a sorry state of affairs.
