Shane Castle Ooh - a good topic for a formal debate: “Resolved: Engineers have a greater impact on society than writers.”

Good teams could really have a lively time.

Derek I like it, Shane! Now that is a debate I would listen to.

From an engineer's perspective, "engineering" is a very broad field and arguably one's impact on the world depends on the number of people directly using or affected by your product and the impact of that product on their lives (reliability in car safety vs. reliability in pocket watches, for example).

Similarly, an author's impact depends on breadth of readership and either depth of material or thought-provoking ideas (Twilight might be widely read, but let's hope the impact on the people who read it was not deep).
