IMHO, DRM is just anotheR PITA for people trying just to get on with their lives, reading what they want how they want. Like blocking of media in international markets (where copyright agreements have not been come to), bypassing it is almost trivially easy.
Having had some digital stores close on me and not being able to access the original books any more (fortunately I was knowledgeable to get rid of DRM and have personal backups of my files) I state DRM is only an impediment to people wanting to pay for the works. Fortunately, I have the technical knowledge to be able to do so, or I wouldn't be able to re-read your Sharing Knife books frecuently as I do.
Sorry to hear the story will not be available, butI'm glad you at least weren't infected with the DRM idiocy. I don't get books with DRM, partly because they are generally already in inconvenient formats and that's just one more hassle, partially because if enough people don't buy DRM books we might get rid of that idiocy.
I got it on my Nook (Barnes & Noble), but I guess those are proprietary, too. However there is a free Nook app that you could put on your tablet or whatever. There's probably a Kindle app as well - I don't do Kindle, so don't know.
Or I could easily buy it from Amazon and strip the DRM protection from it, I don't buy books with DRM protection.
