I just saw this! (Turns out my email address was wrong, so I didn't get the notification). Thank you, Michael, for this very thoughtful reply. I have struggled with writing about experiences that transcend what we think of as everyday reality - experiences that, as you put it, reside in the realm of the inexplicable. I loved your "celestial whale"! And I loved that you took on this challenge in the Snow Queen - so many writers won't touch it, and yet writers ranging from Woolf to Dostoevsky have managed to, somehow, without dismantling the mystery. Thank you! p.s. what a pleasure to be talking with you again - I studied with you at the Napa Valley Writers Conference about - egads - 10 years ago or more, and you remain my favorite teacher and literary influence.
