"... in any large enough group there is a sprinkling of anything." Indeed! I found it interesting that Alice Bulmer described Mirror Dance as her least favorite of the Vorkosigan saga, whereas its a favorite of mine, as well as the book that changed me from a fan into a FAN. ;) No doubt for exactly the reasons that gave Alice pause. I loved those super-painful turning points and how the characters dug into or developed inner resources that they did not know they had. Fantastic!
By accident, I started reading the Vorkosigan books with Mirror Dance, and at the end I didn't much like Miles. Fortunately, I then read Memory and discovered that I had badly misjudged him. I worked my way backwards and forwards from those books, and always return to Memory as my favorite book.
@Carol: I loved Mirror Dance, but when Memory came out I liked it even better. I still re-read it from time to time as one of my all-time favorite books.
A lot depends on the mood you bring to a book and what you are looking for when you read it. I consider *Mirror Dance* to be one of Lois's 3-4 BEST books but certainly not one of her most FUN books. And several times I have thought of one of her books as a "lesser" novel in her catalog; but when I re-read it years later, I discovered that I was just in a "lesser mood" when I read it the first time.
Offhand, I can't think of any fictional hero/heroine whom I actively dislike. Dislikeable protagonists must exist in fiction, but I seem to avoid them quite successfully. I've said before that Miles Vorkosigan isn't one of my favourite fictional characters, but I like him well enough; and he makes his way through some excellent books.
