Anders This is a bit random and off-topic, but it reminds me of the British TV show Call the Midwife (based on a book, I believe, it's set in the 50s), where an elderly nun horrifies the younger midwives by telling them how common infaticide and similar used to be, finally musing: "Are they more valued now because they can survive or do they survive because they are more valued?”

This also made me read an entire article about medieval burials at Västerhus cemetery in Sweden, which was quite fascinating.

Alex Shrugged In the Bible, Baby Moses was saved by placing him in a basket and floated down the Nile. Why did he need saving? Because all Hebrew male newborns were being murdered by order of the Pharaoh. As I recall my reading, Plato recommended killing deformed infants by leaving them out in the open and letting them die of exposure or predators.
