Agreed; too orderly and neat; some gang violence resulted in death for the victims. :( So awful.
I have been thinking a lot about why this scene bothers me so much. I think it is because the rapes are so sanitized and unrealistic. At first I thought it was to not shock the reader but now I believe the reason is more insidious. These are children. This would have been the most horrendous thing that ever happened to them or could have ever happened. They would not just lay there and do nothing. they would have screamed and sobbed uncontrollably during and after the rapes. There also would have been blood as they were virgins having their virginity taken from them by rape. He also bent over backwards to make these monsters seem sympathetic to the readers. Two of them were just goofy teenage boy who he tried to say were too young to understand how horrible what they were doing was. If the rapes were realistic there would be bo way they could not realize the full import of what they did. He must have really had to work on making the officer seem not so bad. He took two of his youngest soldiers on an outing to rape children and raped them too. He tried to say the officer was only fulfilling a duty and taking no pleasure out of the rapes. While he raped Jutta he had a pained pinched look on his face and named over fallen comrades. That he took no pleasure is as unrealistic as the rape scene itself A man cannot fake it like a woman if there is no lust in his mind he can't get it up or perform at all. I wondered why he did this. The only reason I can see is he is one of the collective guilt people who believe all Germans were guilty no matter how young or how old. If you notice he has the girls go to their rapes as if they were being justly punished. He seems to believe they got what they deserved as well as all other German women and children. If this is the case I will never read another book by him. I am also considering something I thought I would never do which is burn this book in protest.
why don't you just admit you hate Russia, everything that is to do with Russia, including the country's culture, I can see you are going through with this russofobic crap everywhere, perhaps time to stop adding nationality bias you clearly obtained from some weird sources and take a hard deep look at your own country history, or European history, or even - oh no, what a concept - there is the rest of the world outside of your little home town! WAR DOES NOT HAVE NATIONALITY. It has an ungly face of a murderers who start them, and unfortunately small minded bigoted people like you are the reason why . at 68 years of age perhaps you should know better.
