Aha. Pronoun confusion. The "He" in question referred to the god, not to Inglis.
I spend more time ironing out such potential confusions in my fiction than in quick blog posts. Inglis was the grammatical subject of the prior sentence, but "the god" was physically closer to the next reference. It would have been more clear if the "He", capitalized and thus a tipoff, had appeared somewhere other than the start of the sentence. Coin toss.

I had figured out that Ingrey and Ijada were ancesters of Inglis, but had missed the Oswin/Sowyl connection. Time for a re-read of The Hallowed Hunt.
Besides the similarity of the names, the fact that Inglis is often described as "glum" can be read as a clue. :) I really like the Penric/Inglis/Oswyl trio!
The Hallowed Hunt is an excellent book, and any reason to reread it will do. I’m not personally fond of the ending (although perhaps some such ending is inevitable), but the rest of it has some good characters that we don’t meet elsewhere. I reread it periodically.

Good question, which I would probably need a book to stop and work out. Although Inglis, if not a saint, certainly earned his god's attention at the end of "Penric and the Shaman". He also had a cameo in The Hallowed Hunt."
