Thank you so much for writing back! I called my mom and told her what you have written, and she said it may be time to get into an ereader! :) I hope she does because, yes, it would make book getting and book reading so much easier. I'll look into the options available for her. And if it doesn't work out, I'll look for the Penric print collections next year. She also told me that my brother got to you first! Some years ago he asked you to sign a copy of Cordelia's Honor for her for a Christmas present. And here I thought I was being so sneaky.
I am another who loves reading eBooks on a tablet (which can also let me listen to audiobooks! Font size adjustable, etc. I couldn't get my mother to try it though. I tried. I love "real" books, but to read myself, I find myself reading a book I have in Kindle format over one I have in paper. Since I can't get a new set of eyes, this helps.
BUT, I am looking forward to the paperback compilations of the existing 6 Penric novellas. When they come out I will buy them and put them in the tiny public library where I volunteer. I have had to replace Shards of Honor twice! It keeps walking away. BUT, that means someone likes it. But I do wish they would return it so someone else can have a chance.
I also love my Kindle Fire (and yes, Lois, a good many of your books are on it)! The Fire does most of the things a small tablet or smartphone can do, because the operating system supports many apps, except the phone part (I have a separate flip-phone for that), and is easy to carry. I don't have wi-fi at home but use it at the library (handily, where I work; and having one helps me help other new Kindle or other device owners) or at McDonalds or some other fast-food place. Erin may also want to look into that as an option for her mom.
Likewise mostly do ereading - my sisters and I got together and bought my mother a tablet to use as an ereader for Christmas just before she turned 80. It's working well for her.
Having some of or maybe the same eye issues as you Lois. I am a firm devotee of the Paperwhite: all of the advantages of tablet plus non- glare, adjustable-light screen and lighter weight. Not that l won't read from tablet or phone in an emergency.

"A print edition is planned, or rather, two collections of three novellas each, but they will likely not be in time for a birthday before late next year"
I'm happy to hear that there are plans that are moving along, even if it is at the glacial pace of print publishing.
I would recommend getting her an ipad or some other sort of tablet, as opposed to the proprietary Kindle or Nook. With a tablet, you can install the Kindle and Nook apps, and read either on one device, as well as library format, which I understand is different. Right now I"m using a Nook, but because the one I was gifted with is trying to die, I'm considering a tablet instead of trying to replace it. I have hundreds of Nook books, many of which I haven't read yet, so I need something that will work with them!
