Oh my, the Lord Darcy stories! I loved them immoderately in the 1980s. Thank you most kindly for reminding me that the Angevin Empire still rules in a (better?) fictional world.
The Marcus Didius Falco series by Lindsey Davis is also excellent - set in early Imperial Rome/Roman Empire.
The Gaius Petreius Ruso series by Ruth Downie also takes place in the Roman Empire, a bit later than Lindsey Davis' series. I love both these series. And just bought a Lord Darcy book -- looks like great fun.
