I always preface sharing Theft of Swords with, "Don't judge it by the bad cover, the book is fantastic!" I think that cover is pretty cringe-worthy but I know you had nothing to do with it. I am very excited for the eventual hardcover editions which will feature the artwork (I presume) of the always fantastic Marc Simonetti.
Well, the Hadrian on the covers looks somewhat how I would picture Royce. At least around the face and eyes. The Royce on the covers looks sneaky in a weaselly way, which isn't Royce's style at all (and the Hadrian in my head is significantly larger than either cover model). I do like the fact that the covers are dynamic (specifically the ones that show both models, not the closeup ones), but would probably have liked them more if the characters were drawn. As they are, they look a little Photoshop-y and have unnatural poses, plus it looks like Hadrian is The Protagonist, which isn't fair to their wonderfully balanced relationship.
I would say that cover of theft of swords which portraits two men where you can see the faces does not attract me at all, and does not fit with my picture of them
However. the cover of the "The Crown Conspiracy" for french edition really shows it for me. http://darkwolfsfantasyreviews.blogsp...
that one is just excellent. Dark, mysterious. draws a reader in...
I feel like they never look the way I imagine them. This was especially jarring when I saw the character of Rez on the cover of Kel Kade's series. Although I had read a few of the books by that point, I was not able to see the cover previously because they wouldn't load in my kindle for some reason.
I think the cover looks nice enough but it doesn't represent the book nearly as well as it should. And it certainly doesn't represent those two in any fashion close to what I had in my head coming into them (read chronicles first).
The guy did a good job with the covers, but different readers have various ways of imagining Royce and Hadrian. I have to admit, as I continue to read Riyria, my mental image of the two is slowly evolving over time. I believe the imagination has been left to play for far too long for a book cover to show us what the two look like. There's too much controversy.
