SpaceX has the Falcon rocket series, and Merlin, Kestrel and Raptor engines, so I think it is a bird theme. The nine comes because that version of the rocket has nine engines, they also built a Falcon 1 with one engine, and once planned Falcon 5 with five before they skipped it.
