Sounds fascinating, can't wait for it to come out!
I am not a big tea or coffee drinker, although when I do have tea, it's black with honey and lemon, not with milk and sugar, so I will appreciate a lesson in tea and tea drinking from the newest novel.
My workmates all drink tea, even the men. They are not white Americans, but rather, their families came from Jamaica and China, so men drinking tea is perfectly normal. I need to find ones that are not so bitter to try. I hated green tea. Anyone have any suggestions?
Isn't Yunnan one of the most beautiful and fascinating places on Earth? I live in China and have travelled here a fair bit but it is my favourite place I have been, so many diverse cultures and amazing places. I am very excited about reading this book!
I will definitely look forward to reading your latest book as I have enjoyed so many of your books already.
Wonderful story. I knew nothing about the growing of tea leaves and its manufacture until reading this book. The depictions are excellent and for a novice like me very interesting. I have never visited China but your descriptions gave me the feeling that I was there. The story of the mother and daughter was poignant. I would highly recommend the book.
I loved this book. We lived in China for 13 years, some of the things you wrote about I saw coming, other parts taught me more about the culture. Even though we no longer reside there, I continue to want to learn about their culture and history. Your books always shed light and bring greater understanding. Thank you!
I loved the book I passed it to a good friend who has adopted Chinese granddaughter. My friend lent it to her daughter. The book was great! We all loved it! So informative and educational!
It sounds like such a great story idea! I LOVE storytelling theory and I believe you are an excellent storyteller and put so much thought and research into your stories . It pays off! I would love to take a masterclass from you on how you construct your stories. Is there a formula you like to follow?
I am so excited about this book. I am new to your work and just finished Lady Tan's Circle of Women. It was amazing.
I just finished reading Lady Tan's Circle of Women today, and I very much want you to continue the Chinese theme. When I logged into Goodreads just now, I saw that you were the 2023 historical novel winner. No wonder! I thought it was one of the best novels I've ever read. I began falling in love with Chinese poetry, art, and fabrics as a teenager. I've never been to Asia, but my husband of almost 50 years spent a few years both in China and Japan as a child, and I envied the furniture and artwork they used in their home. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, has a lovely marriage bed like the one behind your author photo. Congratulations on all your writing success. I plan to add your earlier books to my reading list. What wonderfully consistent ratings you have, too.

What a breath of fresh air, Lisa! Tea is an excellent theme, so refreshing and so symbolic of China, though same can be said of Japan. There is a difference between Chinese and Japanese green tea. I just bought a cookbook called The Yunnan Cookbook published in 2014 by Blacksmith Books in Hong Kong. My husband cooked a few dishes from the cookbook for my birthday dinner. Yunnan is truly diverse ethnically. The China-US adoption topic is fascinating. I was involved in one myself. My husband and I applied to adopt a Chinese girl back in 2005. It was a vigorous process. The Chinese government is so strict about whom it will allow to adopt its country's baby girls who were abandoned because of the one-child policy which resulted in unwanted baby girls who were aborted or abandoned at train stations or other public places where they were intended to be found. Our application did not go beyond the Chicago office because I was not 100% healthy. We ended up having a biological daughter of our own which I cannot complain about. This sounds like an exciting project, as are all your books. Good luck with your new writing journey!
