And yes, luck is also involved in a career: 20% talent, 80% chance!
The plucked-from-the-air percentages vary in that quip, but in all cases the work has to come first. The work (and talent) create a pool of people upon whom luck can then fall. Necessary but not sufficient, as the saying goes.

I imagine it can't hurt to have a Nebula in your pocket already when you're talking to an agent. :)
