Betty I agree, it’s extremely important to read works written by female authors and minorities. I’ve just always worked under the rule to “write what you know,” aka don’t assume to understand the POV of someone from another gender or race without really speaking with those people about their struggles. That being said, you’ve done a great job portraying a funny female character, which is a whole other dimension of skill. For example, I don’t know if you watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but one of the things the writers said they struggled with a lot at first was how to make Dee’s character funny, because they didn’t know how to write a “funny woman” in the realm of that kind of gross, cynical humor. The actress then told them to write her lines as if another man was saying them, and it comes off hilariously. I don’t know why so many male authors get this so wrong, but I really appreciate your empathy, and I’m sure consultation with the women in your life.
