Chris, from someone who has read both of these series...I can tell you that you will enjoy the Saga of Recluse. I actually prefer it above the Imager series. :-)
Have not read Imager yet, I've been reading the Corean Chronicles, but Recluce is definitely worth reading if you loved the social/political systems.
I love them both! I started of with Magic of Recluse, and have since really enjoyed the Imager Portfolio even more!
I started with the Imager series, and have been reading all of Mr. Modesitt's books since then. I really enjoy the complexity of the worlds and the characters, the pacing, and the ethical side of the stories as well. I will be very sad when I've finished them all :) (all I have left to read are some Recluce books, and the Spellsong series). So far, I think my favorites are the Corean Chronicles and the Imager books, but I have enjoyed them all immensely.
