I'd be wary of that outside the US. The fair use laws may be different. I'd definitely contact the artist, especially if the art is *uploaded* anywhere instead of just being used as a slide in class.
Fair use laws in Germany are exceedingly generous for public institutions of learning.

I have no real experience in copyright matters, but I'm guessing the use of one image for educational purposes (and mentioning the author of the image) won't likely lead to costly litigation...
