Mary You might be able to, assuming that you own the rights to the books. Please: not Tom Cruise!!

message 2: by Martha (new)

Martha Wells I'm not lying to you, Mary. I do own the rights to the books, but I don't own a movie/TV production company. If a movie/TV production company licenses the right to make a movie/TV version of the Murderbot Diaries, I will have absolutely no control over the production, and no control over casting. Blaming writers for the casting of the movies made from their books is a very pointless form of harassment.

Mary Not meaning to harass! It's just that some adaptations of beloved books have been negatively impacted by poor casting. Loved the books; can't wait for the next one!

Nina.K Long time fan & completely understand if answering these questions isn't always the most fun, but I feel you've been a bit unfair in this thread. I feel you've added a layer of subtext to Mary's messages. In no way has her happy excitement over the idea of a mini-series come close to harassment. From a reader's perspective it definitely read as "damn, if only X author had been allowed more insight into the production of X movie adaptation, because the casting seems sucky, so I hope any of your potential future contracts allow you more of a say in the casting process, if that's possible". I don't know, you just came off unnecessarily mean-spirited and defensive. I apologize if you didn't mean it that way, I know things have got to be pretty stressful before a big release. With love,

Yonah I felt like 90% of The Murderbot is internal dialogue, no idea how to make it into a good and proper miniseries that isn't stripped of source material's core beauty and oversimplified.

carol. Well, way to discourage an author from answering questions, group. Follow up a question with silly requests, then castigate when you weren't involved with the OP . From an author's perspective, I'd be thinking, "why are they asking me about a hypothetical thing I have no control over when I've been writing excellent books for almost twenty years and would rather talk about those." 🙄 Thanks for taking the time to look and answer, GR questions, Martha.

Nina.K Hi, Carol. I don't think it's completely unreasonable to ask whether an author knows, or wishes, their (wonderful) book is being made into a show... Many author LOVE to speculate about "perfect casting" ideas for their work, even if it may never get picked up by a studio. Of course, if Wells doesn't find that kind of speculation fun and doesn't want to engage with it, well, that's perfectly within her right, nobody ever faulted her for that.
And please understand, my message was never meant to come across as hateful or rude or arrogant, and if it did, I apologize. I just felt the author inserted some of her own frustrations about fan culture into Mary's messages.
I understand where she was coming from. After all, public figures nowadays get plenty of hate, unsolicited "advice" from fans and actual demands from fans who feel entitled to their work. The internet really is a toxic cess pool. So, I completely understand the author's apprehension, but really, in this case, I feel it was misguided and the tone of Mary's messages misinterpreted.
Which, you know, it can happen. Authors are just people like all of us, and we all have bad days and we can't be expected to respond in the best way possible in every single interaction we have.
I wrote my message, because I felt the cheeky&friendly banter-like tone of Mary's message was unfairly lumped together with the unreasonable, overly-demanding subsection of every fandom that feels entitled to the author's time.
Mary just wondered if the author had any feelings or speculations about the potential casting, if a show ever came into fruition. It was all just for fun.
