"Hillhillhill Hill" is the funniest thing I've heard in a while.
Thanks for the reply! Of course, the pronunciation of names normally varies from one language to another, so the correct pronunciation of names in Chalion would depend on the language spoken there. I hadn't heard of Torpenhowe Hill; but the town I live in is overlooked by a hill called Montgròs (Big Mountain), and further away is a well-known Catalan landmark called Montserrat (Serrated Mountain).
It might be interesting in some cases to take each of your invented names and Google them; but you can perhaps think of more interesting ways of spending your time…
That...sounds about right. I'll have to bear in mind the strategy of making a small pile of names to fish from. And presumably, depending on the country, there would be additional parameters to guide invention -- I tried to avoid drawing on names with patronymic stems for one country whose society was matrilineal, for instance.
I'm glad someone brought this up, as I've long admired the Five Gods 'verse in the way its names code particular countries or groups without saddling them with our world's freight. I consider it a benchmark of the trope. <3
It's dreadfully unobservant of me, but I read "The Hallowed Hunt" without consciously noticing the Englishness of the place names. I suppose they just seemed unremarkable to me at the time… Whereas the names in Chalion draw my attention, although they work fine and are perfectly credible as place names.
