I get that feeling very strongly with The Mother of Flame when I go straight from book 1 to book 2. There are times when the MOF help Eric and it doesn't benefit her and all the big things that Eric holds against her had very legitimate reasons for why she did them. Yet you can't deny the fact that the MOF is always trying to arrange things in her own self interest, maneuver people like chess pieces, and use public perception like a weapon. The impression I am getting of her as the series progresses is like a career politician at the level of a President or Congressmen. Yes, nearly everything she does is at the altar of her own power, but that doesn't mean she is incapable of love or affection. I feel like she might actually care about Erik to some degree. Does that sound right to you?
