I kinda think he means in a vaguer sense than just the genre of swashbuckling fantasy - I think he's going for that vibe Greatcoats has of overwhelming, despairing grimdark and emotional anguish that would fit in any proper grimdark novel, but with a fulfilling, happy ending where good finally wins out, instead of a miserable one like a proper grimdark novel.
