This book takes place in present-day suburbia. Everything is normal, until one day a virus, or something else, (the book never clearly states what it is), shuts down all electricity across the world. Everything that we humans once took for granted has now left us, including most cars and other vehicles of transportation. This novel zooms into the perspective of a teenager named Alex. Just like everybody else, he was just living a normal life until the catastrophe, however, his unique skill set and voice has set him apart from most of the rest. Alex, along with his mother, Herb, who is most likely a seasoned veteran of battle, must lead their neighborhood out of the dark and survive. With violence and danger increasing outside of the barriers of the neighborhood, and with food, clean water, and weapons always a reoccurring issue, the chances of survival dwindle. But, you can never count anyone or anything out of a fight, and that is what you must do when reading this gripping kickoff to a series by Eric Walters.
