1014014 A group of men set out into the desert. They are mostly migrant workers being illegally led from Mexico to America. Little do they know this is one of the deadliest stretches of desert in America; this is the Devil's Highway. There are few places where God struggles to triumph over Satan, but the smoldering wasteland these men must cross is one of them. The travelers' fates are at the mercy of the desert. Will these men make it? I cannot say; it is against the rubric's wishes. One must read the book to find out.
The book has a unique narrative style. It has three main focuses: the travelers, the leader of the travelers, and the border patrol. While dancing between these focuses, the author slips in little tales of every nature. I enjoyed this structure because it made the reading experience far more engaging. Instead of focusing on a group plodding through the desert for 235 pages, the reader is allowed to hear about the soccer-star son of one of the travelers. I think this style is what sets the book apart from others.
In my opinion, this book is one of my top ten favorites. It made me realize the complexity of the immigration crisis our country is facing. If you enjoy stories of survival and perseverance I would fiercely recommend it. But keep in mind this book isn't for the weak-hearted.
