Sorry we’re stopping but let’s say it’s for a while…I messed up last read selection. I missed the memo and didn’t suggest anything and didn’t much like the 2 that were selected. Other selections were fabulous. Oh well

I thought this was a great book. His obsession with Hartley had no bounds. The author handled the relationship with these two and her husband so well. And off to Australia or not- I was caught up in it. Then when James left everything to him after Charles being so bitter bc of James’ wealthy lifestyle. I was sad when Titus died. There went the person I thought could save all this drama. Intriguing stuff.

A study of theatre people. They tend to take their drama into real life.

I also looked at the Booker Prize winners to see what else might be a good read. Nothing grabbed me…any suggestions?

The English food he eats are priceless. He thinks he’s a gourmet chef but all he does is open tins!

Finished. Loved it. Recommend any others of her books?

Thank you for the pix of painting; Intro makes me think that writer didn’t read the book! This is a great read is all I’ll say and Thank you for putting it up for a vote. This really is a nice reading group.

Wonderful description of place in first few pages. I was born in UK and she takes me right back there in all it’s quirkiness.

I’m getting started: 500 pages small print. Lol

I’m on the gulf, the gulf

Melody: welcome! Great in-site and I will check out your recommendation. I kept waiting for more in this book too but it was so little pages-an editor’s dream come true!

Cherisa: I wondered about that award too. The story was much like a folktale in its simplicity. I kept waiting for something to happen!

Hey. I finished it. That’s all I’m saying.

It’s on Amazon but is $20. Yikes!

They were beasts of burden- all of the lower class. The back of the book had lots of references so at least the upper class Victorians had a conscience about the wretched lives these people lived.

I have a hard time with Dickens so I found this author much easier to understand. I like that the social commentary is on the other end instead of Jane Austin et al characters.

I’ll fess up…I started it. Really compelling is all I’ll say

I dont know who put this book up for a vote but you picked a gem. Thank you!

I started reading it bc I saw it’s lengthy and I’m one of those busy people. Very nice!

That’s the one I picked altho the other ones sounded intriguing too
