1138537 Little Red Hat, I’m a bit short on time so can’t take on moderator duties right now. What all does the moderator do?

1138537 I’m returning to reading War & Peace, about halfway now where the battle of Borodino has begun.

Where are you at John?

1138537 It would seem that Pierre’s illegitimacy creates a cloud for him wherever he goes. Without this there is perhaps so much more.

1138537 Very much enjoying this book and the manner in which Tolstoy writes. Don’t want spoilers so will wait for the comments of others.

1138537 Just finished War & Peace 1956 film starring Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda. It was wonderful and tho there were of course spoilers, I’m no longer confused about who’s who. Being able to keep the characters straight really makes for a much easier read.

Also, the book is nearly always so much better than the movie. So I’m not finding knowing how it ends a detraction to reading the book.

This quote was so well place in the movie -

The most difficult thing, but an essential one, is to love life, to love it even when one suffers, because life is all. Life is God, and to love life means to love God.

1138537 No I haven’t seen the stage production, how nice it would be to see this musical. There is a 1956 film, War & Peace, starring Audrey Hepburn and Peter Fonda. Have you seen this? Thoughts?

1138537 I read there are over 600 characters in this novel, not all primary of course. Wikipedia has two helpful family tree graphics near the top of the War and Peace page.

*Spoiler*- Did not consider this at first, but studying this family tree graphic could create a spoiler for you.

1138537 Ok great, thank you, Red. (You can call me Lil) I’m very new to GoodReads and know zero html, read the help section on it tho. So I’ll do my best to mark spoilers.

Any further input on using GoodReads or html is welcome 😃

1138537 The Kindle book I have is not divided Volume 1 Part 1 etc.

It is divided up by Books 1 - 15 labeled with years ranging from 1805 - 1820. Each book has chapters.

I’m not sure how to get the comments in the correct location given these differences.

Possibly:
“Volume” = “Book” and
“Parts” = “Chapters”

Can you help with this?

1138537 Hello,

I’m new to GoodReads as of New Year’s Eve 2020. This is wonderful discovery!

War and Peace is of interest, I’m reading epic Classics. My knowledge of this era tho is limited, I wondered if it might be a difficult read without historical background.

Finding this group was a pleasant surprise, perhaps helping to fill the gaps, make this book even more enjoyable and meet new friends 😃👋🏼
