12950 Heh. Yeah, really not my thing. In general, I'm extremely picky about female vocalists. I don't think there are many of them out there who are remotely original. Not that that makes them BAD, per se, but it gets old and depressing listening to different "artists" all doing the same thing, which wasn't particularly creative to begin with. I like the girl in Bishop Allen, but she only actually sings one song that I know of. I also like Nico, Ani DiFranco, The Pretenders. But most of the newer female artists... meh.

That being said... of course you don't have to like my music. That's kind of the point of this group. I guess the only criteria is that you like something someone somewhere would ridicule you for and are brave enough to come here and talk about it. Once this group gets going, I hope no one will be shy about expressing their opinions, but I hope no one will genuinely hold anyone's opinions of music against them in a larger sense either. This is supposed to be fun.

12950 Oh, absolutely. There's an art to negotiating the world of music snobs. In reality, Im a middling at best. But I love music and I'm willing to brave the shame that comes with being involved in the music world :P I feel like I don't have the time to be as 'knowledgeable' as I once was. When I was a teenager, I knew the influences/ favorite artists, previous and side projects, birthplace, etc. of every member of every band I liked. Now I don't know how I ever accomplished that.

I wasn't always really into Sam Prekop. My tastes are changing lately. Maturing, I like to think, and broadening to an extent.

Re; people who aren't passionate about music... I'm mildly perplexed by people wholl listen to anything. But at least they like music. I'm really interested, from an academic perspective, in what it is about music, or humans, or both, that makes it so universally and intrinsically pleasing to us. Whatever the reason, though, it's clearly the case... except for those few people who don't really like music. At least in particular. Don't own any CDs or have any music on their computers. Maybe they listen to the radio in the car sometimes, that's about it. That REALLY perplexes me.

12950 Hey. So this is my big introduction. I'm going to use this post to to further help you decide whether or not you want to involve yourself in this group. Music is extremely important to me. It's one of the things that makes me happiest. Sharing music with people, relating about music, also makes me very happy. So what I want is for this to be a place where lots of people can do that. And please don't take the description too seriously. I'm not going to kick you off for liking a band I don't like. This is all in good fun, but just to get the ball rolling, let me mention a few bands/ artists who I think are worth checking out, if you haven't;

Sam Prekop
Great Lake Swimmers
John Vanderslice
Ghosty
Phosphorescent

Hm... those are all fairly sedate. If you're looking for something fun, check out The Thermals or Machine Go Boom.

These are just a few off the top of my head.

Also, please go here; this is a friend of mine who's incredibly talented. Listen with the knowledge that he actually sounds much better in person.
