It is a story about a young Irish girl who survives Castlepollard, a mother-baby home and later a Magdalene Laundry in Dublin. After almost five years of imprisonment she finds a way to escape, and with determination and the care of an elderly couple she thrives.
She pulls the pieces of her life together, but never forgets what was taken from her. She vows to find the lost pieces of her life, no matter how long it takes, but learns that finding is not the solution to everything.
I was a "banished baby" from Dublin and it took 25 years to find my mother, after meeting her and seeing how the Sister treated me in my search, I knew I had to tell my mother's story and give her a voice.
Alice's story is any girl whose life was stolen, and survived deplorable, insulting conditions to rise like a phoenix. It is what I imagine my mother , or any young woman might have experienced at the hands of the Catholic church. It is based on historical fact, but the characters are fictional.
