Being in love with someone is hard, but being in love with someone you know is better off without you is torture. Jase has loved only one person his entire life. She’s everything he’s not: compassionate, smart, quick witted, and can see people for what they are. But how can you be good for someone when the dyeing words of the only family she’s got left is telling you to stay away from her?
Shouldering the guilt of death of his best friend has been a struggle for Jase for the past three years. He’s submerged himself in a world he’s slowly drowning in. He has exhausted his friends and family with the girls, drugs and destructive behavior. It’s not until the one person that inhabits his drug induced fantasies barges back into his life that Jase decides to clean up his act.
The deal: Spend one year in an experimental drug rehabilitation program with the sister of the man he killed. For Jase, it’s a way to torture himself back to reality. He can’t take the pain of seeing her face every time he slips away. By spending 9 months in facilitated recovery then 3 months on their own, he hopes to come to terms with what he did and have the final rejection of the last person that matters to his heart.
But secrets have a way of coming back to bite when you least expect it. Jase finds that his perfect picture of her isn’t as perfect as he believes, leaving him to realize that his best friend’s final breath wasn’t a warning, but a request.
