16149 Hello! It's Becky - waving from behind the stack of schoolbooks! I want to THANK Kathryn and Judy for offering to co-moderate the group for me - I'm just tickled to death that they are :-D. I know they will do a superlative job leading us :-)

Hello to all the new members!!

A quick reading a quilting update from me - I'm mainly reading school books - this quarter is Theories of Personality and Understanding and Managing Diversity. However, I DO have the latest Stephen King started and catch a few paragraphs here and there.

Quilting-wise, I just finished a huge project that you can see at my quilt blog http://beckyssanityquilts.blogspot.com/
and I've been asked by the same lady to make a baby quilt for a great grandbaby who is on the way. So, I have quilting to do too.

Have fun everyone and I'll poke my head in ever so often :-)

16149 Hi Sharon!

I'm so glad you accepted my invitation and joined our little group! Your art quilts are GORGEOUS! I love them! I very much want to get into this type of art after we're settled. I've done collage and mixed media art for quite awhile but want to do work entirely in fabric.

Wonderful art and wonderful to have you here :-)

16149 I came off my Stephen King kick several weeks ago and have switched to books on creativity and child rearing - specifically raising a spirited child - something I'm continually learning on a moment-by-moment basis. My little girl is definitely "spirited." I don't like labels for anyone but especially not children and my child in particular but I like the description of "spirited" and all it can and does mean.

16149 Yep, it's a bit on the stressful side right now - add in an elderly uncle who is in the later stages of melanoma and it makes for an emotionally charged time for the entire family.

This should be THE month of the actual move but there is SO much to be finished in the basement renovation. I know it will happen but knowing we're on the final countdown and so much has yet to be done is difficult.

16149 Hi JC,

So good to have you join us in this little group that is beginning to grow :-)

I agree with Angela that quilting can be much easier than sewing garments etc... I absolutely do not do well trying to sew anything that has to fit a human body but I do great with my quilting! My sister is just the opposite - she can make fabulous wedding dresses and any other style of clothes you could want but had no interest in quilting - but loves to receive mine made for her :-)

I recommend you consider starting with strip or string quilting using a paper foundation. The best description I've seen for this in addition to wonderful pattern suggestions is this site: http://quiltville.com/stringquiltingp...
I actually used old phone book pages as my foundation for a large full-size quilt I made last fall. I love making quilts this way.

16149 Hi Angela and Welcome!

Obviously, this group is in its baby stages but I think it will grow over time.

You sound like one busy lady! I've got a rather full plate myself - we're in the midst of a move due to losing our house and the need to live close enough to elderly and ailing relatives to be of some help. I have tried to do some stress relief quilting but with things in such upheaval it's very hard to settle down enough to even do that. Right now I'm sticking to my books as my stress outlet.

Looking forward to learning more about you!

Best,
Becky in Georgia

16149 I've been on a Stephen King kick for the last several months. I'm currently reading Desperation and plan to read The Regulators next.

16149 As I mentioned in my introduction, we're getting ready for a move so things are sightly chaotic to say the least. However, I know that is exactly when I need the comfort and therapeutic benefits of quilting the most so I intend to sew through the whole process.

I'm currently sorting my fabric stash into project bags for quilts I want to make for our new home. As I sort my stash, I'm packing any fabrics I don't plan to use for the upcoming projects so that it can be moved. Today I hope to finish that part of the process.

I will have several quilt projects for our new home. I want to make at least one blue and white quilt for the living area, one pink and rosy red quilt for my daughter's bed (full), one lavender and green (very soft, mossy green) quilt for our bed (king), and one dark brown and gold quilt for what we're calling the Music Den. I'm also sorting out polka dot and stripe fabrics for a future quilt, vintage 30s fabrics for a future quilt, and doggy related fabrics for a future dog bed for a future puppy.

So, lots of sewing projects in the works. Hope to begin actually sewing on one of them before this week ends.

16149 Hi, I'm Becky. I created this group in hopes of finding more of my own kind... those who can't get enough books, quilting, or - best of all, quilting books! I'm in the process of moving and will be packing all my quilting books soon. As I pack them I'm going to enter them here at goodreads so I finally have an idea of what I have.

I live in North Georgia with my husband and daughter. Soon we will be living in a basement apartment at my old childhood home so that will add my mother and my older sister under the same roof but different "levels" of the house. More family members live within a "stone's throw" so that will add to the mix.

I will soon be 44 (in May). We will be married for 14 years in July. Our little girl will be 6 in May also. I've been quilting for over 12 years and reading from the cradle it seems.

Looking forward to talking books and quilts with others as they find the group.
