I had read the book before, and I remember it as liking it rather better on earlier reads than I did this time around--I think it's because it relies overmuch on the suspense of not knowing whodunit. This time around I didn't like any of the possible suspects, and I couldn't see why Nigel and his girlfriend were included at all. Did love the bit about Fox studying French, though!

The Miss Marple stories do have a bewildering array of clergy--even when they stick to St. Mary Mead!

I was thinking that perhaps the changing attitude towards Miss Marple in different books in the series discussed up thread was because this first novel was written in first person (by the vicar)? After all, Christie got quite a lot of mileage over the years from unreliable narrators!
