185 I'm sorry. I'm new here. I looked at the solved stuff before submitting, but I didn't see that shelf.
185 Yes! That's it! Thank you!!!
185 I'm not sure if this book is strictly a Young Adult book, but I read it in my Jr. High school library around 1997-98. I think it was relatively new at the time, but I'm not sure. I do remember it was a rather thick hard-cover. It was a historical period setting. I guessed 1500s in the subject, but it could've been any time between the stone age and the industrial revolution...

The main character was a girl in her young teens who doesn't fit in with her village. She has a firey temper, and a dark complexion with funny-shaped eyes. None of this matches her light-haired, calm, even-keel parents. Her father is a blacksmith and doesn't really like her. I think she is an only child. I vaguely remember her having a friend who was a boy her age, but I don't recall any specifics about him.

SPOILERS:
She also can't stand to touch iron. It burns her skin. She figures out that she is half-fae, half-human. She was switched with her parents' biological daughter as an infant. She goes searching for her fae mother and finds she doesn't fit in with the faeries either. So at the end of the book, she decides to live alone on the moors.

Thanks for your help! This has been bugging me for a long time.
