Rectangles, and 6-inches wide! (Wow, I just realized how un-intuitive what I originally typed was)
185 A YA series that I read two books from. The series took place from the perspective of (I believe) middle-school age girls; each girl got her own book and narrated it. The first book I read was about the uncool, underprivileged girl, and how her best friend who loved ballet was slowly drifting away from her and becoming friends with their class's cool girl. The second one was from the perspective of the ballet friend, and her struggles with dance and why she didn't want to be friends with First Book girl anymore. It was insightful as to why friendships fall apart in a way I couldn't completely handle in 6th grade, thus why it stuck with me but I never tried to track down the other books at the time.

I believe one cover was green with cherries on it, and the other was pink something ballet-related. Although it was a series, I don't think they were meant to be read in a particular order.

I read the two books in 2000/2001, and I believe it was fairly new at the time. So probably published late 90s. I believe the author was American - the books definitely seemed like they took place in the US.

Also, the books themselves were oddly-shaped; my best guess is 6 inches wide and 4 inches tall.
