I’m pretty sure it’s for adults but I read it as a teenager.

I read this book 20 years ago. I thought it was called Shadows but when I search it things aren’t matching up.

The only thing I remember about the end is that the school is like sucking energy from the smart kids that have “disappeared” and the kid wants to safe his girlfriend.

I started to read this book in California about 4 years ago. It was in English, and I think the cover had a car on it, like a Trans Am maybe. It seemed to be about a teenage boy dealing with the death, possibly suicide, of his father and his mother starting to date again. Then he starts hanging out with the neighbor guy who has a cool car, they work on it together, I can’t remember if he’s the guy who starts dating his mom. Possible Spoiler:





He decides to steal the car and go for a joyride. And that’s all I know about this book.
