193869 I started a thread in another group about writers of both novels and comics.
In which Stephen Graham Jones's Earthdivers was actually mentioned! In his case I don't think he's written other comic book series.
Thanks for adding names to the list.

193869 A couple of my groups are reading Stephen Graham Jones and, given the wealth of his work, I thought that his comic book series Earthdivers would have been a good entry point. It wasn't entirely a good idea, but you can find my reviews here: volumes one, two and three.

193869 Thanks, I'll pass it along!

193869 A member of another group asked whether this bundle is a good buy:

193869 On a whim, I'm tempted to read Moon Knight, just because his was the last Marvel series I rewatched before my discount o Disney+ expired.

So far I've read Moon Knight by Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev and Moon Knight, Vol. 1: From the Dead. I know Lemire's run is admired.
193869 I'm with Chad.

As I wrote in an earlier post, I consider G. Willow Wilson's run among the best of the decade (besides, she was Kamala Khan's co-creator). Saladin Ahmed's run was unimpressive, and the same can be said incidentally of his Miles Morales, whom he picked up from Bendis. He's now writing Daredevil and I hope he won't undersell one of my favourite superhero characters.
On the other hand, Bendis's long tenure on Miles Morales would be an excellent choice for the theme of the month.

About which, Watchmen obviously comes to mind, The Boys, Invincible...

193869 Love that you love Monstress. It's one of my favourite recent series and in my opnion deserved the Eisners and Hugo.

193869 Yes, he drew the first season (volume 1 and 2) of the 2014 series. I liked his work on The Ultimates for Marvel, though Al Ewing's writing also helped. And his art does look a lot like Brett Booth.

I'm aware that Wildstorm is now an imprint of DC, and incidentally Jim Lee is now a boss at DC.

193869 As always, thanks for the insight. I thought the question concerned the main DC series; many Vertigo titles are classics. (but wasn't Astro City published by Image Comics?)

Not surprised that G. Willow Wilson did great work outside of Ms. Marvel too. I have a few questions about runs whose authors I have admired elsewhere. Are these good?

Aquaman: Andromeda, because of Christian Ward.
Batwoman Haunted Tides, because of J.H. Williams III.
Sideways and Teen Titans (volume 5), because of Kenneth Rocafort.

193869 Unilke Marvel, I've never read DC regularly, so I'm also interested in opinions on the subject. One exception is the current, Eisner-winning Nightwing run.

193869 I'd be inclined to agree, but I thought I was biased.
May 17, 2024 10:50AM

193869 I have a penchant for Miles Morales.
May 15, 2024 06:54AM

193869 Oops.
I thought you wrote "anything by Ed Brubaker BUT his Cap".
May 15, 2024 01:28AM

193869 I've heard great things about Ed Brubaker's Cap: what didn't you like, Chad?
May 15, 2024 01:04AM

193869 Wow, you can hardly go wrong with this list, though I have my favourites.

I fell in love with Marvel Comics while reading the X-Men by Chris Claremont and Hulk by Peter David, which were also a long gallery of great artistic talents.

Daredevil is the third of my favourite characters (for purely sentimental reasons): amazing runs by Brian Michael Bendis and by Ed Brubaker. I thought Chip Zdarsky's wasn't at the same level: the Devil's Reign event was good but the regular series lacked steam.
The same goes for J. Michael Straczynski's Thor: it started with great concepts but kinda went nowhere by the end.

Bendis's long run on Miles Morales is another highlight, though I preferred Kamala Khan.

... and this is what happens when two or more people who have been doing this for decades come together!

193869 Yeah, same question.

Highlights of recent years are the long Thor run written by Jason Aaron, Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson, The Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing, Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the era of Krakoa as a concept and some of its titles...
193869 Didn't someone comment on the Night Eaters in an earlier thread?
193869 The first episode is too self-conscious for its own good about N.K. Jemisin's lack of experience as a writer of comics, but she delivers later on. And Jamal Campbell is fantastic.
193869 Haha, thanks for the quality check!

Also relevant for AAPI Month is Peach Momoko's work for Marvel, Demon Days and Demon Wars.
