199918 The Jim Thorpe Train station was built in 1888 as the Central Railroad of New Jersey Station. It was designed in the Queen Anne style and included a second building, called the Mauch Chunk Freight House. The Freight House was used by train crews as a bunker and locker room. It was torn down when the Central Railroad of New Jersey left Jim Thorpe.
The railroad became the Lehigh Valley Railroad and fell into Asa Packer's control. By the time of his death, the railroad extended into Easton and New York State.

199918 The Harry Packer Mansion was built in 1874 as a gift from Asa Packer to his son, Harry. It's exterior is dark enough to have inspired the Murder House in Disneyland; the owners also host Murder Mystery weekends. Many who have stayed in the house, which is now operated as an inn, have reported mysterious noises and shadowy figures in the night -a family member still searching for their fortune, perhaps?
The Old Jail (1 new)

199918 In honor of the approaching holiday, we at the library think it's important to mention some other important -and spooky- destinations in our little town of Jim Thorpe. The Old Jail, located a few blocks up the street from the library, was built in 1869. It has since been the location of imprisonment and hanging of many, including the seven Molly Maguires. One of them, Alexander Campbell, left a hand print on the wall, which is said to have survived all attempts to be rid of it. His spirit and many others who were trapped there is said to still be haunting the cells and gallows to this day!

199918 Happy birthday to R. L. Stine! He is most well known for the "Goosebumps" series, which was just recently adapted into a fake biographical film in which R. L. Stine is forced to fight the monsters coming out of the pages. To see where the movie began, stop in at the library to pick up some of his spooky books -it's almost Halloween, after-all!

Speaking of films, what's your favorite movie to watch during the Halloween season? We're a big fan of Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" over here!

199918 Today is Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's birthday! He is famous for his book, "Don Quixote de La Mancha," which is known as the first modern story. Another first to come with Don Quixote was the first "fanfiction." Before Cervantes had completed part 2 of Don Quixote, an unnamed Aragon author published his own part 2. When Cervantes read this "fake Quixote," he wrote it into his story, so that in chapter 59, his character encounters an impostor. Here at the library, we have Parts 1 and 2 in one volume!

What's your favorite fanfiction genre?

199918 Today hosts two special birthdays! Confucius, a well known Chinese philosopher who transformed education as we know it, and Simon Leys, who coincidentally enough, was one of the writers who translated the Analects of Confucius.

What's your favorite proverb?

199918 Today is F. Scott Fitzgerald's birthday! His works about the American Jazz Age have earned him a place among some of the greatest American Writers in History. He considered to be a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. "The Great Gatsby" is his most popular book, but the Library actually has several of his books!

Which generation of writers is your favorite?
