Rigging – The system of ropes, wires and chains used to support and operate the masts, sails, booms and yards of a ship.
Mast – A large pole (spar) resin above the deck of a ship and supports sails and rigging.
Foremast – The front mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.
Mainmast – The middle, primary mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.
Mizzenmast – The aftermost mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.
Sail - A large piece of material like cloth, set on mast and used to speed up sailing by being placed in the wind.
Square Sail – A rectangular sail attached on yard, hanging symmetrically across the mast.
Fore-and-Aft Sail – A triangular sail set behind mast, attached to a gaff and boom, parallel with a keel.
Lateen Sail – A triangular sail, set on a long yard and sometimes supported with boom.
Jib - A small fore-and-aft sail extending from the fore-topmast head to the jib-boom.
Trysail - A small fore-and-aft sail used during the storm conditions and placed instead of the regular sail.
Course Sail - The largest and lowest square sail on a mast
Spanker – A fore-and-aft sail on an aftermost mast, bent with a gaff and boom.
Spar - A wooden or metal pole used for rigging such as mast, yard, gaff, boom, etc.
Bowsprit – A pole which extends forward from the bow of a ship.
Yardarm or Yard – A pole which horizontally crosses a mast.
Gaff – A swinging pole used to extend the top of a fore-and-aft sail away from a mast and support it.
Boom – A horizontal pole used to extend the foot of a fore-and-aft sail from a mast and support it.
Stay – A heavy rope, cable or wire used as support for a mast or spar.
Hull –A frame or body of any sailing vessel.
Keel – The bottom of a hull, scratching from bow to stern.
Rudder – A metal or wood plate mounted at the stern, used to maneuvers a ship.
Bulkhead – A water-tight structure dividing a ship into compartments.
Abaft or Aft – A rear section of the ship.
Bow – The front part of a ship.
Deck – A horizontal platform covering a hull from one side of a ship to the other.
Poop – An enclosed structure, a rear part of a deck.
Stern – The aftermost part of a ship. A captain office and officers' quarters.
Forecastle –The part of upper deck at fore end of ship; the forward part of a ship with living quarters.
Main Deck – The highest part of a deck in some vessels.
Berth – The sleeping and living quarters below main deck or built-in bed on a ship.
Orlop – The lowest deck on a ship, used for covering storage.
Bilge –The bottom of a ship, the transition between the bottom and the sides.
Scuppers – The openings, spreading along edges of a deck and allow water to drain off into the sea.

Captain
The Captain of a Pirate vessel was elected by the crew. This person was responsible for asserting the general command of the vessel, especially in times of war.
Quartermaster
This person was also elected by the crew. The Quartermaster's main duty was to look out for the crew. This was done by representing the crew's interests, as well as maintaining order aboard the ship.
Sailing Master
(First Mate)
The Sailing Master is often referred to simply as The Master and is more commonly known as the 1st Mate. This person was typically selected by the Captain. The Master was responsible for ship handling and general navigation. It was also this person's duty to look after the ship's charts and navigational instruments.
Boatswain
The Boatswain (often shortened to Bo'sun) was responsible for general deck activities such as dropping and weighing anchor, as well as the handling of sails. The Bo'sun would also have been in charge of whipping those that "misbehaved".
Coxswain
The Coxswain (often shortened to Cox'n) was responsible for piloting and maintaining the longboats of a ship. Most notably the Coxswain was charged with transporting the captain to shore and back.
Gunner
The gunner was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Ship's cannons, guns and other arms. This also included any and all ammunition, powder, and equipment belonging to those weapons.
Cook
The ship's cook was responsible for overseeing food and drink provisions, as well as preparing meals for the crew. This member of the crew was often an older or injured sailor who was thus prevented from serving in other duties.
Striker
The Striker aboard a ship was a master at hunting and fishing. This person's skill was often called upon to provide food for the rest of the crew.
Artist
It was the job of the Artist aboard a ship to document the voyage through varied medium. Be it paint, sketch, carving, exc. Very few Pirate crews were lucky enough to have an Artist aboard.
Grommet
(Powder Monkey)
The Ship's Grommet was responsible for transporting powder from the powder room to the cannons during times of battle. This position was typically filled by a young boy, and is more commonly known as a Powder Monkey.
Sailor
A sailor would be a person, usually thirteen years or older, that simply worked for the ship. They take orders from the First Mate and a few will have their own Ship's Boy to mentor.
Ship's Boy
A ship's boy would be a young boy, usually from four years to thirteen, that was learning the ropes of the ship. Each ship's boy would have a mentor, usually called a Ship's Daddy, to teach them what they needed to know.
