Here's a list from Chicago Mag of the best books by Chicagoans about Chicago in 2017. I just started reading "Electric Arches" by Eve Ewing and really enjoy it so far. Are there any books by local authors that you enjoyed this year?

Our Reading Awake group meets monthly to discuss a book that engages readers in the complex and challenging issues of our time. On November 29th we'll be discussing
Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight for Incarcerated Women. Would you recommend any books you've read recently that approached difficult or complex subject matter? We'd love to get fiction, nonfiction, and poetry recommendations for future meetups!

I'm reading Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies right now. She's really great at crafting nuanced characters in just a few pages. I would highly recommend it if you're interested in immigrant experiences.

Do you ever prefer to read short story collections instead of full length novels? Do you read collections from start to finish or pick them up periodically while reading other books? Let us know what you prefer and why!
